What is CELTA, TEFL and TESL?
CELTA stands for Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults. TEFL means Teaching English as a Foreign Language and TESL is Teaching English as a Second Language. The terms “TEFL/TESL courses” and “TESOL courses” are often used interchangeably to refer to training courses for people who want to teach English.
CELTA is basically a TEFL/TESL/TESOL course administered and awarded by the University of Cambridge and the most widely recognized course of its kind in the field.
What do the acronyms EFL and ESL mean?
EFL = English as a foreign language, so TEFL = Teaching English as a foreign language, to students studying in their home country or for a short time abroad.
ESL = English as a second language, so TESL = Teaching English as a second language, to students who are now living in an English-speaking country and need English to work or study.
Why should I take a CELTA Course instead of a TEFL or TESOL Course?
· Cambridge CELTA Certification is recognized by professional organizations such as SEP Mexico and by private language schools, so you will be able to find work in Mexico immediately after completing the course.
· Pre-selection of candidates – you will findyourself in a group with other native speakers or bi-lingual English speakers and not a group of EFL students.
· CELTA is the most recognized TESOL program in the world. Wherever you go, employers know what your training involved and that you are ready to go into the classroom.
· A ratio of one tutor per maximum six trainees which ensures a lot of individual coaching and support.
· Trainers who have been trained and approved by Cambridge ESOL to run the course.
· A teacher practicum in which you teach groups of real language students and not your peers who already speak English.
· External assessment of the course by a Cambridge assessor who ensures that Cambridge standards are being met and that grading is standardized internationally.
· A total of 160 contact hours.
Do I need to be a native English speaker in order to take the CELTA program?
Not at all! Cambridge ESOL states that all applicants – native speakers or not – need to “have a standard of English which will enable them to teach at a range of levels”. While we do not require a specific exam score, successful applicants would score 7 or above on IELTS. We have had many successful non-native CELTA graduates on every session.
What is the timetable of the course?
The course hours are 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, Monday to Friday for four weeks. You must attend 100% of the course.
What qualifications do I need to do the CELTA course in Mexico?
a) While the CELTA course in Mexico is essentially practical, some evidence of study at a higher education level is necessary in order to cope with the academic side of the course. In some cases, work experience may be accepted in place of qualifications.
b) Have a positive attitude towards teamwork and experiential learning activities. This includes acknowledging the relevance of these in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and willingness to actively participate in the course.
Will I need to do much work outside the daily timetable?
Yes! The CELTA course is extremely intensive. Most of your evenings and weekends will be spent planning lessons and preparing the written assignments. It would be impossible to work or study while doing the course.
Do I need to speak British English or North American English?
We regard English as a global language and therefore welcome applicants from all native speaking countries, as well as non-native speakers with a proficient level of English. There is no preferential treatment for, or discrimination against trainees because of origin, accent or pronounciation.
Is there an age limit?
You must be at least 18 years of age to be accepted into the CELTA Course in Mexico City. There is no official upper age limit. Some employers may have a preference for younger English teachers whilst others tend to prefer more ‘mature’ teachers. The majority of our trainees are in their 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, but we have successfully trained and found employment for graduates in their 50’s and 60’s and therefore welcome applications from all interested parties regardless of age, gender or religion.

What are the chances of finding a job after completing the course?
Excellent. At present, there is a shortage of certificate qualified English teachers in Mexico, Central / South America and worldwide. Consequently, the majority of our trainees will have found employment by the time they have completed the course. The only exceptions tend to be graduates who wish to work in a relatively difficult location (due to demand, timing or regulations). The demand for teachers is so high in many countries, that we are able to offer guaranteed employment on successful completion of the course.
Is job placement assistance included?
